The Ruwenzori Mountains, famously known as the Mountains of the Moon, are a UNESCO World Heritage site located on the border of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Unlike the volcanic giants of East Africa (like Kilimanjaro), the Ruwenzori is a non volcanic, block mountain range stretching about 120km. It is home to Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley, which, at 5,109m, is the third highest point in Africa. The range is legendary for its surreal, prehistoric looking vegetation, including giant lobelias and groundsels and its rare status as an equatorial region featuring permanent glaciers.
